According to their belief, kanekes are descendants of Batara
Cikal who is one of the gods or batara who descended to earth. The origin is
also often associated with Adam as the first ancestor of humans. Baduy people
prefer to be called Urang Kanekes. The religion of the Baduy people is Sunda
Wiwitan rooted in the cult of the Spirits of the Ancestors (animism) which is
influenced by Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam. The essence of the belief is
demonstrated by the senility or the absolute customary provisions adopted in
daily life.

such as Cikadu Katug, Kadukolot, Gajeboh, Cisagu, and others. There are some
uniqueness of this tribe that is Pu'un, Gotong Royong, still in the validity of
the marriage and others.
1.
Pu’un
Each group has a leader or figure who becomes a role model
in taking clues and decisions on social problems in the community. Likewise,
the Baduy dalam community, a community leader in the Baduy tribe called Pu'un.

determining planting time and harvest period, he also applied customary law in
Baduy community, he also treat the sick population.
2.
Gotong Royong
Gotong Royong is indeed an Indonesian culture. Almost all
regions in Indonesia have a culture of mutual assistance. However, along with
the technological developments, this culture of mutual assistance has been
abandoned by the people of Indonesia.
Unlike most people in other regions in Indonesia who have
left the culture of Gotong Royong, the Tribe of Baduy still firmly hold the
spirit of mutual cooperation. They usually have mutual assistance when moving
farmland to a more fertile place.
3.
Wealth not seen from the house shape
Unlike modern society that lives in urban areas whose wealth
is generally demonstrated by large and luxurious homes. The wealthy inner Baduy tribe will not have a
large and luxurious house, because the whole population in the Baduy dalam
villages has a large and same house shape. The wealth of Baduy people in the
fact is seen from the possession of other objects, such as pottery.
What distinguishes the rich community in the Baduy dalam tribe
is the possession of the pottery made of brass. For the wealthy Baduy people
can have some pottery. The more the number of pottery the Baduy dalam tribe,
the higher the degree of the person.
4.
Natural bath Equipment
If you are visiting the Baduy dalam tribe, do not hope you
will find a community using soap, shampoo or toothpaste when bathing. People
prefer to use materials available in nature to cleanse themselves.
Baduy people use stones that are then rubbed into their
bodies in replacement of chemically-made bath soaps. Meanwhile, to clean teeth,
they use coconut fibers. The Baduy people in fact really appreciate their
nature, they do not want to use equipment that contains chemicals and plastic
waste.
5.
An arranged marriage
An arranged marriage is not uncommon for modern society. In
the life of modern society, the affair is fully handed over to the child, the
parents are only giving the blessing. However, it does not apply to the Baduy dalam
tribe.
A girl aged 14 year old, she will be engaged with a man who
comes from the Baduy dalam tribe. During the marriage process the male parents
did not have to choose the woman who wanted to be married to her son. However,
if there is no match, male and female are willing to accept the parents or to
Pu'un.
6.
Prohibition of visiting for 3 months
The tribe of Baduy people are not Muslims, but they have the
tradition of fasting done for 3 consecutive months. This fasting activity by
Baduy tribe is called "Kawulu". When they do the tradition of Kawulu,
an outside resident is forbidden to visit Baduy dalam. If you want to visit there,
only allow to visit Baduy luar Village but not to stay.
Baduy people consider Kawulu to be a sacred activity and
should not be bothered by the outside society. During their time Kawulu offered
prayers to the ancestors to always be given salvation and given abundant
harvest.
7.
Although many food, chicken is a fancy food
For modern society, chicken has become daily consumption in
fulfilling the needs of proteins. However, this does not apply to the Baduy dalam
people.
People there love to keep chickens, if you visit the village
they will meet the chicken that roam there. Nevertheless, they will only
slaughter their chickens on certain days, such as during traditional ceremonies
or wedding days.
8.
The difference between the Baduy dalam and the
baduy luar of clothing
The Baduy people do not use patterned clothes like modern
society. For those of you who are confused about distinguishing the Baduy luar
tribe and Baduy dalam, you can distinguish them based on the colors of their
clothes. Baduy luar people wore plain black clothes while the Baduy people wore
plain white clothing and white headbands.
The people of Baduy luar are characterized by wearing black
clothing and headbands. When the Baduy dalam and Baduy luar lived in the
Kanekes area, Baduy Dangka lived outside the area of Kanekes, namely in the
village Padawaras (Cibengkung) and Sirahdayeuh (Cihandam). Kanekes people know
the two governmental systems, namely the national system, which follows the
rules of the unitary Republic of Indonesia and the customary system that
follows the customs that they believe. Both systems are merged or acculturated
in such a way, so there is no conflict.
The tribe that belongs to the sub-ethnic Sundanese is divided
into two groups, namely Baduy luar and Baduy dalam. Outer Baduy people more
open themselves to influences from outside. They already know the technology of
electronic goods, using tools such as chainsaw to build houses, more modern
clad, and some have embraced Islam.
Meanwhile, Kanekes dalam are those who still strongly hold
the customs of their ancestors. The Kanekes people are not allowed to use
vehicles, footwear, technology, and are obliged to wear natural white and dark
blue (tarum) clothing and wearing white headbands.
9.
Culture goes anywhere on foot
Unlike Japanese people, Indonesians are known as lazy walking
society. This then led to the buildup of vehicles in urban areas. It does not
apply to the Baduy people.
Baduy people love to walk while traveling anywhere. They are
still on foot when they visit their family in the city or just to the city to
sell their crops. No wonder if the natural condition is still very awake and
the Baduy people are also healthy.
10.
Simple furniture
Not only refused electronic equipment, the Baduy people also
refused to use household furniture such as plates or cups made of metal or
glass. They prefer to make use of the ingredients available in nature, for
example their glass made from pieces of bamboo trees.
The Baduy people have their own way to enjoy life. They live
unpretentious with nature, no need of sophisticated and fancy equipment or
clothes in the tops. The culture of the Baduy people illustrates that happy is
simple.
For those of you who visit there, keep the harmony there and
never to go through the customary rules that they have made. Keep the
cleanliness of the village there by not throwing garbage.
That is the debris diverse culture Indonesia has. There are
many lessons we can get from the Kanekes people, one of which is how they can
keep the nature around where they live. Their faithfulness to the teachings of
ancestors, made them always loving and caring for nature. This is what we ought
to emulate for the creation of Indonesia's always beautiful nature.
Revise 1
Talking about Indonesian Culture is endless. Indonesian culture is indeed diverse, this is because Indonesia has more than one thousand ethnic groups. These tribes spread from Sabang to Marauke. One of the famous tribes it is Baduy dalam Tribe which is located in Banten area, precisely in Lebak Regency of Banten. Another possibility is because in the northern part of this tribe there is a river called Baduy Dalam river. While they themselves more often call themselves "kanekes" in accordance with the name of their region.
