Indonesian Folk Songs Is Endangered
Have you ever felt lucky to be born and live in Indonesian? Our Indonesia is rich in natural forces and also cultural diversity. Indonesian has 33 province, and every region has a different variety of cultures. That its hang over language, ethnic, food, traditional dance and folk songs. There are many traditional cultures typical of areas in Indonesian that we must preserve, one is folk song. Indonesian is one of country who has a lot folk/traditional songs. In Indonesian has numerous folk songs ranged from Sabang to Merauke. And then, Indonesia has approximately 103 folk songs. The song of Indonesian region is very diverse because of many tribes that reside in this country. So, that we know Indonesian is very rich in folk songs. Apparently, some of folk songs in Indonesia there are popular until the world. But, what does folk songs still popular until now? The answer is no. In new era folk songs doesn’t more popular, because now western songs more popular. In new era the young generation are familiar with western songs than folks song from own country. They young generation or generation Z are doesn’t know songs from the country itself because they consider to western songs. Because, they are don’t know and understand about own nation folk songs. So, if you want to know about the causes, here there are some causes of endangered folk songs.
First, the era of globalization. The current phenomenon of globalization is the extinction of the regional song The industrial revolution 4.0 was part of today's stream of globalization and relatively fast information technology that has enormous implications for the perspective, culture, and life-styles of today's millennial generation. At the time of modernization and globalization, technology and information flow can’t be avoided, like it or not technology and information we must received. Modern technologies of today it’s a nightmare for traditional cultures in Indonesian. Crisis of globalization has been the negativity impact on culture in Indonesian. Certainly, that will be causes large effect on social system and culture of Indonesian. The effect of globalization ongoing quickly, that causes the culture shock. Culture shock is condition when society unable to retain various the impact come from outside so that occur imbalance inside society life. Accordingly, a lot the young generation currently disposed to ignore culture in Indonesian, because they have been affected by western culture. Head of the child protection commission/komisi perlindungan anak (KPAI), Susanto said “children’s songs/folk songs in Indonesian gets lost over time, even endangered. Different with other songs that is developing rapidly”. He tell the children’s songs/folk song now in endangered. Because develop of music and innovation on digital era.
Second, the less awareness young generation to develop Indonesian culture. The less awareness is caused by a lack of cultural education at an early age especially at the school. So that’s why the young generation consider to less awareness because they didn’t have knowledge and understanding of Indonesians culture. Beside that they are less interested in Indonesian folk songs because they often listening western songs. They say that western songs more interested than folk songs. They felt proud when sing that song than music from their country. Therefore, the young generation almost prefer to unconcerned with Indonesian culture especially folk songs. But actuallyn many of Indonesia's original songs proved to be highly artistic and appreciated globally. This is one of dangerous causes because young generation ought to be successor culture in Indonesia especially is folk songs. They must be continuer all of heritage this country. Young generation is treasure of country.
Third, the less attention from government. The government is the key to resolve impact of western culture. But, in fact the government disposed to ignore that problem and lack of concern for education. Whereas, a lot of thing it can do to resolve that problem. Government need to optimize system of curriculum for best education in Indonesian school. Therefore, the government need to make a breakthrough innovations for better Indonesian folk songs.
Before I write this essay, I do interview to some children’s in my environment. When I asked to some children’s about what does he known about folk songs in Indonesia. So after asked about that, result from some the answer is they are mostly just little bit known about Indonesian folk songs. And then, they say they just know more about western music. They often listening that music from application “Tik-Tok”. It sad when hear the young generation thought of traditional songs as archaic, because they prefer to listening western music.n The young generation they would be proud to sing western songs fluently rather than to memorize the lyric of the song from their country. Different with the children’s who was born in 1990s, Since childhood, Indonesian children have been introduced with national songs and folk songs. Even, they are can memorize the lyric of folk songs.
As we know folk songs is the identity of the country itself and must be proud. Therefore we must develop our culture especially for folk songs. Nothing can preserve the existence of a culture than the societies that live in that culture. Therefore, no one can preserve the songs of Indonesian territories other than the Indonesian nation itself. As the young generation of nations, it should be more concerned about this culture. Cultural identity is a nation that can create unity and national unity. From the unity, integrity and positive things from that culture doesn’t wrong that the Indonesian nation will eventually evolve into a developed country and have a better future.
Accordingly, Indonesia has many culture that which is should be preserved so that Indonesian culture would no longer be claimed by other peoples. As an Indonesian society Who are in the middle of a globalized era must be Able to preserve and develop Indonesia traditional folk songs To avoid extinction and citizens are driven to love their native Indonesian culture even more. Be proud of culture in Indonesia, we must loved own culture than western culture. Then, introduce the culture that exists in Indonesia to the world.
